Plant Combinations for Spring

As we move into spring the number of blooming plants can blow you away. With all the flowers and color present in Durham during this time of year, it is easy to find plant combinations that give you a bold effect. The challenge is to develop combinations that can move beyond the bloom frenzy of spring. Below are two incredible spring combinations that will work all the way until fall.

Daphne odora ‘Aureamarginata’ is one of the superstars of early spring. An evergreen with fragrant blooms this plant thrives in sun to part shade. We suggest pairing it with Acorus ‘Ogon’ a bold gold ornamental grass. The gold in the Acorus picks up on the creamy variegation in the Daphne. Plant purple crocus in the same area and you’ll echo the pale purple buds that open to pink flowers on the Daphne. As the crocus fade you’ll begin to see new fronds of Japanese Painted Fern, a great plant for part shade, it will provide contrast off of the green Daphne and gold Acorus and provide a jolt of color and interest until frost. As a bonus all of these plants are deer resistant!

Redbuds are great native trees providing support for wildlife as well as beautiful flowers for human enjoyment. Provide a backdrop for these stunning blooms by planting burgundy leafed Loropetalum. The darker burgundy will echo the lighter pink flowers of the Redbud. Lighten the color concentration by working in some Daffodils. Their yellow and white will provide the coolness needed to make this hot color combination work. As Daffodils fade, a chartreuse or lime green Hosta can provide a bold texture and color that will last until fall. If deer are a problem in your yard, consider replacing the Hosta with a variegated Soloman’s Seal.
