As spring quickly gives way to the first hints of summer, many of our clients are already thinking ahead to heat and drought-tolerant landscape designs. The good news is that a resilient garden doesn’t have to sacrifice beauty. By thoughtfully combining color, texture, and staggered bloom times, we can create plantings that not only withstand the heat but continue to feel vibrant and intentional all season long.
One of our recent designs at Grub in Durham showcases this approach in an east-facing bed built around three key elements: silver foliage, purple foliage, and warm-season flowering perennials. The silver tones come from a mix of Stachys ‘Helen von Stein’ and Juniperus ‘Blue Point’, offering a soft, reflective backdrop. To contrast, we layered in rich purple foliage using Heuchera ‘Forever Purple’ and Sedum ‘Blue Pearl’, adding depth and visual interest even when blooms are not at their peak.
To bring the bed to life through the warmer months, we incorporated Salvia ‘Furman’s Red’ along with a perennial hibiscus that will carry color from spring well into summer. The result is a balanced, low-maintenance design that thrives in the heat while still delivering seasonal impact.
