Winter Evergreen Interest

The snow and ice are finally melting, and I am looking at my garden asking myself some questions. What spaces are looking a little bare? What’s holding the space together? Are there any areas that need more balance?

This time of the year, evergreens play a big part in the landscape. They provide structure, interest, and balance when mostly everything else is quiet.

Read on to learn about some of my favorite evergreens and why they are winter stand-outs in my garden:

Osmanthus fragrans – it is a visual anchor for a few different spots in my yard. Its glossy foliage and rounded upright habit provide structure and interest in every season. And the birds love it!

Fatsia japonica – It has a tropical look with big bold leaves and adds a ton of unexpected evergreen interest. It may be my favorite thing to look at in my yard right now.

Juncus ‘Blue Arrows’ – this plant adds a great bluish vertical accent to the small bed around my currently frozen pond. It also gives the area a modern feel.

Cephalotaxus ‘Prostrata’ – this plant is a low spreading evergreen with a graceful fine texture, providing great winter interest. Perfect for covering up those bare spots.

Where does your garden need more structure or balance? Do you have empty spaces that could use some interest? Do you need something to look finished and intentional?
