How Do Gardens Hold Up During Drought? Beth Surveys Her Home Garden

With ongoing drought conditions and water restrictions across the Raleigh-Durham, NC area, many homeowners are wondering how their landscapes will hold up without regular watering. After several months of limited rainfall and no supplemental irrigation, Beth, Bright Leaf’s Landcape Designer, took a closer look at her own home garden to see which plants were thriving and which were feeling the effects of the dry conditions.

Her collection of potted agaves and mangaves continues to look strong, demonstrating why drought-tolerant succulents are excellent choices for water-conscious landscaping. Pineapple sage is also adding color and interest, while plants growing in naturally shaded areas benefit from protection against intense sunlight and heat. Wooded areas and established shade can play an important role in helping plants withstand extended dry periods.

Beth also surveyed her cannas, vitex, hedychium and Autumn Joy sedum to see how these garden favorites were responding to the lack of water. Each plant responds differently to drought, depending on its water requirements, location, soil conditions and exposure to sunlight. While prolonged drought can challenge even established gardens, thoughtful plant selection can help landscapes remain attractive with less supplemental watering.
