My Covid Project – Reveal

Almost a year ago I introduced you to a project that I started at my house during the early part of the pandemic. Now I’m back with a reveal of our new and improved backyard space. Read on to learn more about our space!

Seating area

I decided to work with the existing materials – pea gravel and stone, but completely changed the layout of each to create a large central seating area (the better for social distancing). In the summer the chairs surround a large planter, which is replaced by a firepit in fall and winter.

Deeper Planting Beds

By moving the seating area to the center I was able to create deeper planting beds, which allow for more interesting plant combinations – including this Cercis ‘Ruby Falls’, Yucca ‘Color Guard’, Stachys ‘Helen von Stein’ and Sedum ‘Lemon Ball’.

Creating privacy
The space is enclosed by a combination of structures as well as a large Acer palmatum ‘Bloodgood’ creating a feeling of privacy. The tree is also a great opportunity for hanging baskets of seasonal planters, and the hammock underneath is protected from summer sun.

We have been so fortunate to have this beautiful space to share with friends and family over the last year and a half.
