My Rain Garden Planting Projects

My goal is to take responsibility of storm water on my property by catching the rain and holding it until it’s slowly absorbed. A rain garden planting is a sustainable landscape solution to slow pollution runoff, erosion, and prevent flooding our nearby streams. Read on to learn about my rain garden planting projects.

My first rain garden project began when I noticed lawn erosion and mulch washing. In particular, I successfully addressed the washout under the deck. I created a berm with a low depression that holds water for the surrounding roots to slowly absorb. I dug a shallow trench to lead excess water away slowly. I planted Aronia, Iris, Asclepias, and Woods Aster. It’s fun to watch the rain garden out of the kitchen window.

My second rain garden project is in the far back of my property. My house is at the lowest end of the street and the storm drains empty just beyond my property line. Heavy rain events cause mulch washout and sometimes complete flooding. I designed my plantings around the natural shape of the slope, using stone borders to slow the storm water flow and prevent mulch washout. In the lowest depression, I planted a variety of Ferns, Lobelia, Lunaria, Forsythia, Variegated Solomon Seal, Variegated Iris, Crested Iris, Acorus, Winterberry Hollies, Oakleaf Hydrangea, Sourwood, and Redbud.
